In 1812 John and Elizabeth Macarthur’s Canton-based agent and friend Walter Davidson dispatched from China a large service of dessert (or fruit) plates, each monogrammed with the initials JEMcA, for John and Elizabeth Macarthur. Until recently it was thought that the reticulated berry basket from John and Elizabeth Macarthur’s original dessert service had not survived. However, following the release last year of the limited-edition replicas of two plates from the dessert service that remain in the HHT’s collection, we were thrilled to learn that the original reticulated berry basket had survived in the home of a Macarthur descendant. Cracked and worn and with handles missing, this rare and fragile surviving piece was entrusted by the owner to HHT Members so that the basket, with its matching stand, could be replicated.
We are pleased to announce that we have commissioned a small run of just 150 sets. A number of these have been donated to the HHT for interpretive use at Elizabeth Farm. The remainder are offered for sale.
